As I helped my grandparents
move into an apartment this past month, I realized that this was probably
the final stop in their journey. There was an air of melancholy as we
emptied out their old house and loaded up the moving van.
A week before the move they
had the obligatory moving sale. A sale made more poignant by what was
being divested, than what was being kept. The memories remained, but
the collected treasures were being passed along.
Of course this got me all
Maudlin. Funny how when we first start out on this journey there's a
mad rush to collect stuff. Every trinket and bauble has some emotional
significance, and garages the world over are full of priceless bric-a-brac
that we cannot be parted from. Then one day the realization hits home
that it's just stuff. Nice stuff it may be but it's stuff nonetheless.
So as one generation passes
it's collected treasures along, I get to add another box to add to my
growing collection of stuff.
