Daniel Amos - Mr. Buechner's Dream

JevInstincts

I'm pretty self aware as a rule. I'm here and I know it. I also think (like most people) I'm the cente of the universe, and pity the fool who happens to be in my spot. I'm also quite convinced I'm morally, intellectually, and physically superior to everyone. So it always comes as somewhat of a rude awakening to realize I'm a complete and utter idiot at times. In fact if I could watch myself, I'd probably spent a good portion of the day calling myself names and giving me the finger.

Case in point: Laundry. Like any self respecting male there are a few household chores I excel at - taking out the garbage (well, maybe not excel, but it gets out once a week), vacuuming (definitely don't excel, but I know where it is), and as necessitiy dictates I can do the laundry. In fact at this task I do excel. I'm quite proud of the fact that I can do laundry in half the time my wife does.

The other day though my wife got a headstart on me by (gasp) separating the clothes, and leaving them in strategic piles throughout the upstairs hallway. In a sense she was building an idiot's paint by numbers for doing the laundry. I can read labels too, so long as they're in English. Those pretty pictures baffle me - which in short leads to guess work, and as we all know guess work has two outcomes:

1) Success - you rock. Pass go collect your 200 dollars and have a beer and relax in front of the T.V.

2) Failure - you suck. How could you not understand the instructions?

So there I am faced with a pile of pre-sorted clothes. Many of which I recognize as mine. I glance at a couple of labels - uh-oh, symbols. Hmmm, they're all dark. That means cold. Okay - I'm set. Large load, cold, nice dollop of cleaning agent, stuff the machine, turn it on, walk away. Wait for praise from wife for being proactive.

Outcome number 2.

How was I to know that those particular symbols meant delicate? If a picture is worth a thousand words how come the people that designed the instruction labels didn't use the "wordy" pictures?
