Near the end of September I got The Banos back together for one evening to take part in a benefit concert for cystic fibrosis awareness. The event although not close to being sold out, was fairly well attended given the limited promotion. The Gee Just Thongs concert featured the musical and story telling talents of Theo Obrastoff. Theo is a man of great passion who told the story of his son Andrew who passed away a couple of years ago from cystic fibrosis at the wizened age of fifteen. Theo managed to tell the tale without being maudlin and really demonstrated the strength not only of how a parent faces the horror of losing a child, but of how faith and love can overcome any obstacle. Considering how many times he's told his story, it sounded fresh and there was a little smile on Theo's face as he spoke. The audience was allowed in to a special place, and it was like being a fly on the wall as we heard a father speak of his son. My involvement was more or less a happy accident. I still don't know how it all came about, but it did, and it turned out pretty well. My song selection was on the silly side, knowing that Theo's songs and message although wrapped in hope, would be emotionally challenging to get through. I don't know what Theo thought of my set, and I never asked. I can only assume that he was blown away and was left wondering how he'd follow such an interesting opening act. He graciously closed the show with a duet of Lost Dogs Breathe Deep, which meant a lot to me. It was the most fun playing I'd had in a long time. Thanks Theo. Life is short, live it well.
