The Pit
Dragon Trilogy
Jane
Yolen's trilogy about a young man and his quest to raise a dragon. This
may have been a juvenile adventure story, but it was good fun and I
enjoyed myself thoroughly.

The Continuing
Xanth Saga
The
fourth, fifth and sixth books in the Xanth series by Piers Anthony.
Good solid fun, and by the end of the sixth book you can start to feel
Xanth becoming a parofy of itself. However, there was still plenty of
meat on the bones early in the series.

The Voyage
of the Space Beagle
I
read a lot of golden age stuff this past year, and although a lot of
the science of the early genre is funny now, I've always enjoyed fantastic
fiction for the stories, and the Space Beagle was pretty entertaining.

Servants
of the Ark
  There
are times when I like a good yarn about good and evil. Servants of
the Ark took me a while to get at, but once I got going it was a
solid series that had enough strange original twists to keep it fresh.
Not a well known series, but one worth checking out in my opinion.

Margaret
Atwood

Oryx
and Crake
This
is one my wife bought. but has yet to get around to reading. So I figured
I'd spin it first. I haven't read much of Atwood's stuff, but she's
been around a while and is well respected. There's a lot to like here,
and she tells a hell of a story. One does get a little tired of post
apocalyptic tales after a while, but she has a deft touch, and there's
just enough truth to the telling to make this seem hauntingly probable.

Number
Five. Greg Bear's haunting story about the nature of reality. Powerful
stuff.

Swan Song
I
happened to really like this one a lot. Yeah, it gets a lot of grief
as a knock off on King's The Stand, but there are a lot of end
of the world stories out there, and this one was pretty bloody entertaining.

For
me this was one of those surprises that caught me totally off guard.
Not your typical adventure story.

Miracle
on 34th Street
Yup,
the venerable classic. First time I'd read it, and boy howdy it is a
magical tale that will make you ashamed you ever doubted Santa's existence.

Ilium
There's
a lot to like with Dan Simmon's Ilium. It's big, bad and immemsely
entertaining. It's also the first book in a series which sucks. Oh well,
I'll have to spring for the next one before I forget what happened.
Cool stuff here kids!
