SPOOKY TUESDAY

It'll Never Fly Orville! (©1995 Brainstorm)

it'll never flyTracks: Inside / Spoken / I Still Care / Pain To What / Runaway / Her / Someone's There / Wrong Image / Homeless / Wasted Youth / 17 / Good Ol' School Days

Yet another band I'd never heard of, but took a chance and bought three of their albums because they were cheap. Someone had classified them as Prog-Rock. With a name like Spooky Tuesday, I figured what the heck.

The band is from Hawaii, which in of itself is pretty cool. The foursome consists of Scooter, Pepe, Chap, and Christapherobin. The project was recorded and mixed by the late great Gene Eugene, who along with Ojo Taylor served as executive producers. I was pleasantly surprised, but this is not - I repeat not progressive rock - I think they meant alt-rock.

Still, it's pretty good, and more mature than I would have expected after seeing how young the members of band were. I'm not good at musical comparisons, but if I had to I'd mix them up with bands like Broomtree, Sixpence None the Richer, and Jars of Clay with a dash of Nirvana.

All in all an okay listen, but nothing that will spend a lot of time in my CD changer.

Happy Dissonance (©1997 Innocent)

dissonanceTracks: Personal Institution / Salvation / Selfish Love / Hansel & Gretel / Styrofoam / Cry Me To Sleep / Suicide / Sleep / Free / Trust / Agua / The Smoking Song

My second of three Spooky Tuesday discs. It's an okay album - this features truly horrible cover art, and practically indecipherable liner notes. Here's a hint: if you want people to read the lyrics and notes make it easy.

Musically, this is a rough unpolished effort, although it does have a certain charm. The songs are somewhat hit and miss which makes for an uneven listening experience. The performances are fair to good - they're not musicians musicians, which may account for the rough unpolished sound.

I liked this one less than their debut.

Trouble We Make... (©1999 5 Star / Jackson Rubio)

trouble we makeTracks: Breaking Out / Take Over Me / Offered Myself M / Why Do You Wail? / The Problem With Pain / I Can Feel Your Love / Your Love Is Like / All I Need / Brand New Day / Richest Man / Enough Of Me / Rachel

… and finally the third and final disc in my collection. What happened here? This is actually pretty darn good. The band hit its stride this time out, the songs have more of an edge, and the playing is pretty tight. Andrew's vocals still slip into the weak and hard to hear category from time to time, but overall this is their best yet. Actually probably their best ever since the band broke up after this one.

This one will see light of day once in a while, it's pretty good.
